Every day, 33 children sustain agriculture-related injuries. Every three days, a child dies because of an agriculture-related incident. That’s according to the National Ag Safety Database which reports the number of farm-accident fatalities is not declining in proportion to the decline in farm population, partly because of the increasing average age of people on farms.

In late November, Michigan became the fifth state to require that all egg-laying hens in Michigan be kept in cage-free systems and the sale of non-cage-free eggs end by December 2024. Notably, thus far, Michigan is the largest egg-producing state in the U.S. to adopt cage-free legislation – coming in at seventh place for egg production.

They note that calls to Farm Aid’s farmer hotline increased by 100% between 2017 and 2018. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 111 million people live in areas with shortages of access to mental health professionals.
